Class Action Lawsuit: Preparing For Your Class Action Lawsuit

The Class Action lawsuit against Walden University was settled out of court without the need for a jury trial. This was originally filed by a former student who was unable to attend classes while undergoing a mental health evaluation at the University. In that case, the suit was later refiled in state court in the name of that same individual. The new complaint names all of the named defendants. While the suit names the entire class, the complaint does not indicate whether any other individuals or entities have been improperly named in the complaint.

At the time of filing the complaint, there were five named plaintiffs. Two are currently enrolled at Walden University; two more are employed at various locations.

Some of the class action lawsuit participants have already received monetary settlements from their cases. There are also those who have yet to receive anything. As previously stated, this particular case involves individuals who were improperly placed on the waiting list while the lawsuit was being processed.

As previously stated, any person can file a lawsuit.

However, as previously stated, those who wish to file such actions must first file the appropriate actions in the proper manner. This is done by filing a lawsuit complaint with the court. The lawsuit complaint itself then becomes the point of discussion in any meeting that occurs at the parties’ offices, whether or not it is related to the filing process.

The current class action lawsuit involves a former student who was improperly placed on the waiting list.

After that, the suit was filed in state court. At that point, there were three Named Defendants: the State of Walden University, and one individual who provided false information to the court. It should be noted that there are often multiple named parties who can be named in class action lawsuits. Such lawsuits are particularly common when the individuals named in the suit happen to be large corporations.

At this point, you should expect to have one or more meetings with your attorney.

At these meetings, you will discuss the lawsuit and all of the claims involved. You will also discuss timing. If you are filing a suit against a corporation, you will want to have the complaint filed with the court within three months of the date of the lawsuit.

For an individual who files his/her own lawsuit, the time frame will vary, though it is not uncommon for the suit to be filed within six months of the date of the lawsuit.

If you have been involved in a class action lawsuit, you may be wondering what would happen next.

One thing that could happen is that a court hearing will be scheduled. You will then have to participate in a deposition. During this deposition, you will be asked questions regarding both your lawsuit and the conduct of the alleged negligee(s). If you are not happy with the answers you are given, you have the option to have your attorney represent you before a judge, or you can choose to represent yourself.

  1. I would like more information about the class action against Walden University. I am enrolled in the master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and not getting the help needed to find a field experience site to complete internship hours therefore I cannot get my degree. I am 64 years old and have over $30,00 in student loans. I feel cheated and misrepresented by this school and want my money back. Please let me know if you can help.

    1. Girl! I enrolled in the Mental Health Counseling program back in 2009. I did not get my degree because I could not find a field experience site as well to complete my practicum and internship. I was told that students would be assisted with finding a place to complete both of these. That was a concern of mine because I did not know anyone in the field. They stated that they have contacts and would be able to find a place to intern/practicum. During the second Residency, I started to hear faculty and various personnel stated that it was up to us to find our own place. I started to express my reservation about this along with other people during this time. They reassured us that the statement was geared towards those who were working at hospitals or already had mentors. We were in a mix group of people that was new to mental health counseling and ones who worked at facilities. So, I believed them. Later, closer to completing the program, the academic advisor began to say that I need to begin looking for a place to intern and that she would not be able to assist me because she would not have any contacts in my State. She added that if she could find someone that I would have to pay the professional to allow me to intern at their facility. I never heard of an internship that the intern paid to work there. I heard of unpaid internship but not pay to be able to intern. I was not working at the time so I definitely could not afford to PAY anyone. So, I tried to call various facilities in NJ and Pennsylvania on my own but could not find a place to do my internship. Either way, I could not afford pay to intern as she said. This is not the only thing that they did but I wanted to let you know that you are not the only person that was or is in this boat. This program has cost me so much money!!!!! I do not know how you are only $30,000 in student loans with them. My student loans are now $280,000. This includes some of my undergrad but my undergrad loans was (consolidated) approximately 20% of that total. The other 80% is all from that program. AND I DID NOT GET MY DARN DEGREE!!!!! Craziness!!!!!!

  2. Please include me in the class action suit against Walden. I started at Walden around 2005 in their MS in Psychology. I went through the program with no problem until I got to the Master’s thesis. I could not get my professor to understand what I was saying in my thesis. I had my thesis actually written prior to being needed. The confusion with my professor extended the process an extra 2-3 quarters longer than needed. I directly went into their Ph.D. in Psychology program. I sailed through the program until the dissertation.

Again I could not get my professor to understand what I was presenting. My studies in PTSD and my years of working with disabled combat veterans provided medical proof that PTSD, after a period of time, became a medical-biological condition due to changes in the Limbic system of the brain. This lack of understanding with my professor created where my process in the program was stymied. I eventually ran out of student loan money and had to drop out prior to completing my degree. I tried emailing my academic superiors but did not receive any responses or if I received any responses it was not helpful.

I believe that the extra 4-6 quarters cost me my degree. At that time my concept was still under discovery and research. I expected my professors to at least be open to new approaches to a significant issue. I believe I was robbed of my degree. I would like to be included in the class-action suit. If possible I would also like Walden to be required to grant me my degree of Ph.D. in Psychology. I completed everything except for my dissertation and what they called internships. If I had a deeper and more sophisticated understanding of PTSD than my professors then I should be granted my degree for, if not anything else than, knowing more than my professor.

    1. I need to know how to join in on the lawsuit. I strung along in their Ph.D. program until I ran out of student loan money. There were several of us within our program that was Brilliant. However, what we discovered was just a bunch of instructors that welded their powers to keep students unnecessarily bouncing around without letting them complete their desired program. Ow, I’m stuck with student loan debt at age 71 and no employment to ever come close to helping me with the payment of the debt.

  3. I’m at four and a half years in what was supposed to be a 2-year program MSN… I have all the documentation.. they falsely advertise and mislead and misrepresent their programs… please include me.

  4. I too would like to be included in this class action as I was mislead into the MSN – Informatics program 2009-2013 when I had to find my own facility to complete the practicum portion of my degree when they did nothing to assist. I done a majority of the leg work for something that I was advised was already in place until it came down to that last portion of my degree requirements. They also advertise that they assist with finding employment for the degree obatained, but not once did I receive any correspondence from them after graduation for any reason and definitely not to assist me or inquire whether or not I needing help with locating a position for the MSN degree that I had completed. Only more student loan debt than if I had kept my previous nursing degree. Misled is an understatement.

  5. I would like to file a lawsuit against Walden for numerous things there deals with castle branch there only text for an acute care Advance practice nurse program is youtube videos and online bone on how to pass the certification exam I am a practicing nurse practitioner I have a lot more to tell my physical and mental health were affected I have lupus and other autoimmune illness which they cause exacerbations. is there an attorney I can contact?

  6. I feel I am in the same boat as the rest of you. I am in the master’s Psychiatric Mental Health NP program, have done well all along until Clinicals. I paid someone 2,000.00 to precept me and she was a nightmare – we did not speak the same language, she said I never showed up for clinicals, blatant lie, she said I was rude, another blatant lie, etc and withdrew me from clinical – I FAILED PER Walden. They are a gip joint and suck money out of people, this is not a reputable way to do business, this is WRONG on many different levels.

  7. I have found several unethical practices by the instructors. Including not responding to a student’s concern, and failing to calculate the student’s grades accurately. Failing to display the student grades on assignments.

  8. I would also like to be included in the lawsuit. I have paid half of the debt thus far created by my Walden “education” in the nurse practitioner program. I was responsible for finding all of my practicum sites, and they did not help with placement. I almost was unable to complete the obstetrics program, due to the “preceptor chosen” 5 weeks into the course, after they had previously approved the preceptor. If I had not known an OB to take me on, I would not have been able to complete my degree. The degree also took longer than it was promised, with more courses involved. The instructors did not actually “teach” anything, I taught myself, with actual refusal from my pediatric instructor to answer any questions regarding grades or answers to clinical questions. I was told “go look it up”. I do not see where my education was worth $120,000, where most other college MSN programs would have been half this cost.

  9. I would love to be included! This is NOT a “school” and it has zero “professors” outside of their labs, which I loved because it is literally the ONLY instruction you will ever receive here. The “professors” are rude, offensive, and teach nothing. There is no recourse with problems, hard to talk to your advisor and you get a different one every time, they refuse to give me data that I have requested several times. What is the percentage of students that actually pass their licensure exams? They refuse to present that information. At this point I am too far in to turn back. At 50, I am astonished at the lack of teaching, and obstinance of staff. They do not even update their information or assignments, sometimes the due dates are wrong because it’s from a prior quarter. They raise the prices but there are no services. Multicultural resources are all from before 2005, most from 1990’s. That is absurd for a topic like race that evolves and changes every 10 years (please do not think I am saying that race is all better, that isn’t it). I was told I could not write about anything with the LGBTQ community because my “professor” knew I had a gay friend. What? This school is a joke!

I could write a book, this barely scratches the surface.

  11. Walden University

I am a disabled veteran who obtained a Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology without knowing that the program was not APA-accredited. Now I have wasted my GI Bill. I have not been able to increase my salary or use my Ph.D. once. I continue to get denied jobs and career opportunities I was led to believe I could have upon completing this degree. I feel deceived.

  12. I would like to know how to join this lawsuit. In 2021, I had covid during the month of April and May. I was in the doctorial program and was unable to complete my last assignment. I had received two unsatisfied reports for the quarter. Because I was unable to complete the last assignment. The dropped me and charged me over $3,000. I have contacted them several times and even wrote the President of the college. No response and today I found they had place this debt on my credit report. I believe the staff and workers are trained to beat students out of every penny they can especially the minority students.
    I am being cheated.

  13. I would like to be included as well. I am just not hearing about the class action lawsuit and I was a student at Walden seeking a doctoral degree in Healthcare Administration. When I got to my last class I was told that I didn’t have enough financial aid to finish. I was so angry. I asked why did they not inform me until the end of my program. They had me thinking that I could finish my degree program there. It was a lie to just get money.

  14. Everything is true an I still don’thave my Doctorates degree. Instructer stated several time she wasn’t going to read the paper and I ran out of money.

  15. I am currently going to file a lawsuit against Walden also. If I can join this lawsuit I would be happy to do that. I time out because I spent six years trying to get a PhD in Teacher Leadership. It is a good thing I stopped at the specialist degree and then went back for the PhD. I was never told that I was close to timing out. I feel like I just milked for tuition. There was never a chance that Walden was going to give me my PhD.
